Online counselling and therapy by video or phone
Choose your psychologist or counsellor from their profiles. Talk about stress, anxiety, low mood or grief. Each session ends with an agreed next step.
What therapy and counselling can help with
General mental health means online counselling or therapy with a psychologist or counsellor. You talk through what is going on and what you want to be different. Your practitioner helps you work out practical steps to try between sessions.
Many adults book when stress or low mood has lasted longer than usual. You can book without a diagnosis or a GP plan. A Mental Health Treatment Plan is only needed to claim a Medicare rebate on psychology sessions.

Questions about therapy and counselling
Still deciding? Read all FAQs or send us a question.
Do I need a GP plan to book?
No. You can book any session yourself. To claim a Medicare rebate on psychology sessions, you need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your usual GP or MyMedicare practice.
Should I see a psychologist or a counsellor?
A psychologist is a registered health practitioner who provides therapy. Medicare rebates may apply to their sessions. A counsellor offers talk-based support for stress, grief and life changes. Counselling has no Medicare rebate. If you are unsure, send us a question and we will suggest where to start.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no set number. At the end of each session, you and your practitioner agree the next step. That might be another session, a break or no further care. You can pause or stop at any time.
Can I choose video or phone?
Yes. Pick whichever suits you, and you can change it for any session. Video needs a device with a camera and internet.
What happens in an online counselling session?
It runs live for 50 minutes by video or phone. You and your counsellor talk through what is on your mind and agree the next step before you log off.
Who sees what I share?
Your practitioner keeps it confidential. The law allows a few exceptions, such as serious risk of harm. They explain these in your first session.
