What ADHD coaching helps with

ADHD coaching is a practical, goal-based process for daily life. You and your coach work on routines, planning, time, and starting and finishing tasks.

Coaching sits outside diagnosis and treatment. ADHD coaches are not psychologists, and they do not diagnose or treat any condition. You can book coaching with or without a diagnosis. For an assessment or therapy, you can book a psychologist instead.

You might book coaching if you often notice

  • Trouble getting started on tasks
  • Many projects left half finished
  • Losing track of the time
  • Plans that fall apart quickly
  • Routines that never quite stick
  • Missed deadlines and forgotten appointments

ADHD coaching by video or phone

Every session runs live by video or phone with your ADHD coach. You can join from home, work or anywhere in Australia with a private space to talk.

Sessions can use the tools you already have, such as your calendar, phone reminders or a notes app. Your coach may share your plan on screen while you take notes.

How ADHD coaching works

Coaching runs as a series of 50-minute sessions. You choose your coach and agree each next step together. Your fee comes in writing first.

  1. Choose your coach

Read the coach profiles and pick the person who suits you. Book through the online intake, or send us a question first.

  2. Hear from us

We aim to reply within one business day. Your fee, session length and next available times are sent to you in writing.

  3. Set your goals

Your first session looks at your week and what gets in the way. You set the goals you want to work on.

  4. Practise between sessions

Sessions work on skills such as planning your day or breaking a big task down. You try them out during the week.

  5. Agree next steps

Before you log off, you and your coach agree the next step. That might be more sessions, a referral or a pause.

You decide how many sessions to book. You can pause or stop between sessions.

What you leave each session with

Each session ends with a short plan. It sets out your goal, the steps for this week and the tools you picked to try.

At your next session, you look at what worked and what did not. Then you adjust the plan together and agree the next step.

Your next step may be

  • More coaching on one goal
  • Starting on a new goal
  • Sessions with a PsyAus psychologist
  • Booking an adult ADHD assessment
  • A referral to another service
  • No further coaching for now

What to have ready

You do not need anything special to start. These can help you get more from each session.

You do not need an ADHD diagnosis to book coaching. If you have an assessment report, you can share it with your coach.

  • Your calendar or planner

Bring what you use, even if it is empty. Your coach can start from what you have.

  • A list of tasks

Jot down the jobs you keep putting off. A few lines are enough for your first session.

  • One or two goals

Pick what you want to change first. It can be small, such as leaving home on time.

  • A quiet, private space

Somewhere you can talk and focus for 50 minutes, with a stable internet connection or phone signal.

ADHD coaching questions

Still unsure? Read all FAQs or contact us.

Do I need an ADHD diagnosis for coaching?

No. You can book coaching with or without a diagnosis. Coaching focuses on daily skills such as planning and routines, so it does not depend on one.

How is a coach different from a psychologist?

A psychologist is a registered health practitioner who provides therapy and assessments. An ADHD coach does not diagnose or treat. Coaching focuses on skills, habits and planning.

Can I see a coach and a psychologist?

Yes. You can book coaching alongside therapy or an adult ADHD assessment with a psychologist. Let us know when you book so we can plan the timing.

Can I claim a Medicare rebate for coaching?

No. Medicare rebates do not apply to ADHD coaching, even with a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Rebates may apply to eligible psychology sessions with a treatment plan.

Can I have my coaching sessions by phone?

Yes. You can meet your coach by video or phone, whichever suits you. You need a private space to talk and a stable connection for each session.

How many ADHD coaching sessions will I need?

It depends on your goals. At the end of each session, you and your coach agree the next step. You then decide whether to book more sessions.
